Stacker Trailer Financing Explained

Most stacker trailers are financed. Here is how it actually works, so you know what you are agreeing to before you sign.

Trailer loans are not car loans

Trailers are financed by specialty lenders, often the same ones that finance RVs and boats, and the terms look more like an RV loan than a car loan. The two things buyers notice first: longer terms are available, commonly up to 180 months on new units, and lenders care more about your credit profile and less about the trailer's age than an auto lender would.

Longer terms mean lower payments but more interest paid overall. A $70,000 trailer at 8.49% costs about $868 a month over 120 months and about $689 over 180 months, but the 180-month loan pays roughly $20,000 more in interest across its life. The payment calculator on every listing lets you compare terms side by side.

Rates

Rates track your credit tier and the market. As a guide, our calculator uses 8.49% for excellent credit, 8.99% for great, 9.99% for good and 12.95% for fair. Those are representative annual percentage rates, not offers; your lender sets the actual rate after a full application.

Used trailers and older model years sometimes carry a slightly higher rate or a shorter maximum term.

Down payment

Ten percent is a common starting point and is what our calculator assumes. Zero-down programs exist for well-qualified buyers. A larger down payment lowers the payment, can improve the rate, and reduces the period where you owe more than the trailer is worth.

What lenders look at

Credit score and history, debt-to-income ratio, time at your job and address, and the loan-to-value ratio on the trailer. A good profile with a reasonable down payment on a new or late-model trailer is a straightforward approval. Thinner credit files or high existing debt can still be approved, often with a larger down payment or a shorter term.

Pre-approval and your credit score

There are two kinds of credit checks. A hard inquiry happens when you formally apply for credit; it is visible to other lenders and can nudge your score down a few points for a while. A soft inquiry is a look at your credit that only you can see and that does not affect your score.

Our online pre-approval is a soft inquiry. You provide your name, address and date of birth (no Social Security number), you authorize the check, and you get an answer in about two minutes. It tells you which tier you qualify for so you can shop with a realistic budget. When you choose a trailer, the lender runs the full application, which is the hard inquiry, and that only happens once.

What is included in the amount financed

Typically the trailer price plus tax, title, registration and dealer fees, minus your down payment and any trade-in. Delivery can usually be included. Extended service contracts and GAP coverage can be added; whether they are worth it depends on how long you plan to keep the trailer and how far you tow it.

A note on the fine print

Pre-qualification is not a loan approval or a commitment to lend. Final terms are set by the lender after a full application and depend on credit approval, the specific trailer and the final amount financed. If any of that is unclear when you are at the desk, ask; a good finance person will walk through every line before you sign.
